Here are the lists of Spanish-language learning schools in Antigua and Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, as they will appear in the revised edition of my Lonely Planet guidebook, "Guatemala, Belize & Yucatan: La Ruta Maya," to be published in late summer, 1994.
SPANISH SCHOOLS
Antigua is the nicest place in the country to study Spanish, and there are many schools to choose from - around 70 at last count.
Price, quality of teaching and satisfaction of students varies greatly from one school to another. Often the quality of the class depends upon the particular instructor, and thus may vary even within a single school. Instructors tend to move around from one school to another to improve their own incomes and teaching conditions, so it is difficult to say which schools are recommendable at any given time. If possible, ask for references and talk to someone who has studied at your chosen school recently.
Many of Antigua's Spanish schools are organised into two loose groupings, the Asociacio\'n de Academias de Espan\~ol, Apdo Postal 76, Antigua Guatemala; and the Escuelas Unidas de Espan\~ol. Both claim to be approved by the Guatemalan Ministry of Education and INGUAT (Institute of Tourism).
